Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is likely to disrupt structural network properties due to diffuse white matter pathology. The present study aimed to detect alterations in structural network topology in TBI and relate them to cognitive and real-world behavioral impairment. Twenty-two people with moderate to severe TBI with mostly diffuse pathology and 18 demographically matched healthy controls were included in the final analysis. Graph theoretical network analysis was applied to diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data to characterize structural connectivity in both groups. Neuropsychological functions were assessed by a battery of psychometric tests and the Frontal Systems Behavior Scale (FrSBe). Local connection-wise analysis demonstrated reduced structural connectivity in TBI arising from subcortical areas including thalamus, caudate, and hippocampus. Global network metrics revealed that shortest path length in participants with TBI was longer compared to controls, and that this reduced network efficiency was associated with worse performance in executive function and verbal learning. The shortest path length measure was also correlated with family-reported FrSBe scores. These findings support the notion that the diffuse form of neuropathology caused by TBI results in alterations in structural connectivity that contribute to cognitive and real-world behavioral impairment. The hydrodynamic influence of deformable porous surface layers on the motion of a rigid sphere falling in a narrow cylindrical tube filled with a stationary Newtonian fluid is studied using lubrication theory. The porous layers on both the surface of the tube and the sphere are modelled as binary mixtures of solid and liquid components. The sphere is placed at an arbitrary position in the tube and is free to rotate. Effects of the clearance between the sphere and the tube, the eccentricity of the position of the sphere and the properties of the surface layers on the velocity and rotation of the sphere are studied. It is found that, when the lengthscale on which the velocity varies within the porous layer is much smaller than the clearance, the effects of the porous layer can be represented by an equivalent slip boundary condition, the slip velocity at the boundary being proportional to the local shear rate. The slip velocities have a strong influence on the motion of the sphere when the clearance is small. For a given clearance and slip parameters, both the falling and rotation velocities of the sphere increase with the sphere eccentricity. The shear stresses on the surfaces of both the tube and the sphere are greatly reduced when slip boundary conditions are applied, as is the pressure gradient in the region between the sphere and the tube wall. This work could have some relevance to the creeping motion of blood cells in the microcirculation where the glycocalyx, a polysaccharide-rich layer, covers the external surfaces of both endothelial and red blood cells.

In this paper we outline the hyperbolic system of governing equations describing one-dimensional blood flow in arterial networks. This system is numerically discretised using a discontinuous Galerkin formulation with a spectral/hp element spatial approximation. We apply the numerical model to arterial networks in the placenta. Starting with a single placenta we investigate the velocity waveform in the umbilical artery and its relationship with the distal bifurcation geometry and the terminal resistance. We then present results for the waveform patterns and the volume fluxes throughout a simplified model of the arterial placental network in a monochorionic twin pregnancy with an arterio-arterial anastomosis and an arterio-venous anastomosis. The effects of varying the time period of the two fetus' heart beats, increasing the input flux of one fetus and the role of terminal resistance in the network are investigated and discussed. The results show that the main features of the in vivo, physiological waves are captured by the computational model and demonstrate the applicability of the methods to the simulation of flows in arterial networks.

We present a photometric study of the stars in ionizing star clusters embedded in several giant H II regions of M33 (CC93, IC 142, NGC 595, MA2, NGC 604 and NGC 588). Our photometry is based on the HST-WFPC2 images of these clusters. Color-magnitude diagrams and color-color diagrams of these clusters are obtained and are used for estimating the reddenings and ages of the clusters. The luminosity functions (LFs) and initial mass functions (IMFs) of the massive stars in these clusters are also derived. The slopes of the IMFs range from Γ = −0.5 to −2.1. Interestingly, it is found that the IMFs get steeper with increasing galactocentric distance and with decreasing [O/H] abundance.
